They&#8217;ve never been seen in public before but I figured now was a great time &#8211; being M:TG&#8217;s 20th anniversary &#8211; to share them with you.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re curious why these were never printed, the full story can be found in this <a href=\"https:\/\/peteventers.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/09\/5andabitmagicprologue\/\">prologue post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the color circle turns towards White &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-199\" alt=\"5Color-White\" src=\"https:\/\/peteventers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/5Color-White.jpg\" width=\"850\" height=\"687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peteventers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/5Color-White.jpg 850w, https:\/\/peteventers.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/5Color-White-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, White has a broader concept but White in Alpha was very euro-centric with its knights, paladins, medieval castles, the clergy, and the occasional angelic warrior. That&#8217;s very much reflected in this piece.<\/p>\n<p>The great big glowing guy in the front wasn&#8217;t really the best choice for front and center but he was a powerhouse White card of early Magic and so he had to be given a significant spot. Still, he looks kinda goofy. His cheery countenance is offset by possibly the surliest lion alive; look at that scowl! I think he even has a 5 o&#8217;clock shadow. Maybe he&#8217;s hung over. All joking aside, I did overdo the lion&#8217;s lower jaw. This is a good reminder of how amazingly useful Google image search is for artist reference. It&#8217;s easy to forget how sometimes hunting for reference through magazines and books could really derail a tight deadline back in the day.<\/p>\n<p>So, take a shot at identifying all the cards in the image. Remember, there are no cards from sets later than <em>The Dark<\/em>. The answers are below.<\/p>\n<p><!--more Did divine inspiration strike? No collection of White should be without her.<\/li>\n<li>This could be my variation on <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=1699\">Cathedral of Serra<\/a> or it might be a generic cathedral added to balance the castle and to sub-divide the lower left and right between priests and soldiers. I&#8217;m not sure anymore.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=1804\">Cleansing<\/a>. One of the only cards from The Dark in the project, because I&#8217;d painted it so I knew what it looked like!<\/li>\n<li>The scales of <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=234\">Balance<\/a>, suitably placed in the armor&#8217;s pattern.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=240\">Castle<\/a>. I guess it&#8217;d be cheating to say there&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=1626\">Moat<\/a> there, right? \ud83d\ude09<\/li>\n<li>The priest from <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=265\">Resurrection<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=1604\">Clergy of the Holy Nimbus<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=262\">Personal Incarnation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=269\">Savannah Lion<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=274\">White Knight<\/a> and soldiers setting out on a <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=247\">Crusade<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=260\">Northern Paladin<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=294\">Plains<\/a>. Not the most visually exciting of lands which leaves the landscape looking weirdly uniform. I guess that&#8217;s fitting for the color of Order.<\/li>\n<li>This one surprised me when I rediscovered it: The shoulder pads are decorated with <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=275\">White Ward<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=239\">Blue Ward<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=236\">Black Ward<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=264\">Red Ward<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=251\">Green Ward<\/a>, with a cog at the center that might represent <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=1066\">Artifact Ward<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/gatherer.wizards.com\/Pages\/Card\/Details.aspx?multiverseid=1067\">Circle of Protection: Artifacts<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Next, onto Blue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s the fourth in a series of promo pieces I did for Magic, waaaay back in 1994.
